On October 2nd, 2024, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) published the Monthly Unemployment (MU) figures for September, 2024. The Monthly Unemployment figures are estimated using trends in the Live Register figures based on data from the Labour Force Survey (LFS), and are subject to revision. The Labour Force Survey is published on a quarterly basis by the CSO and provides the official employment and unemployment figures.
According to the latest Monthly Unemployment figures, 124,300 people were unemployed in September, 2024, a decrease of 2.4% on September, 2023. The Monthly Unemployment Rate (MUR) was 4.3%, 0.2 percentage points lower than a year ago. 1,300 fewer women were unemployed in September 2024, and 1,800 fewer men than in September, 2023. The Monthly Unemployment Rate for men decreased by 0.3 percentage and for women by 0.2 percentage points to 4.3%. Women accounted for 47% of the unemployed in September 2024 and 2023.
In September, 2024, 39,900 people aged 15-24 were unemployed, 2,500 fewer young people than in September, 2023. Their MUR was 10.8%, 0.8 percentage points lower than a year ago. Over the year, unemployment amongst young men increased by 3.8% to 21,600, and their unemployment rate was 11.2%, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points over the year. Unemployment amongst young women decreased by 16% to 18,200, while their unemployment rate dropped by 1.6 percentage points to 10.4%. In September, 2024, women accounted for 46% of those unemployed in this age category, a decrease of five percentage points over the year.
The Monthly Unemployment figure for people aged 25-74 was 84,400, in September 2024, a slight decrease over the year. The Monthly Unemployment Rate (MUR) was 3.4% in September 2024, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points over the year. In this age category unemployment decreased for men by 5.6% to 43,800, while their MUR declined by 0.3 percentage points to 3.3%. Unemployment increased for women by 5.5% to 40,600 women and their Monthly Unemployment Rate (MUR) remained unchanged at 3.4%. Women accounted for 48% of those unemployed in this age category in September, 2024, an increase of 3 percentage points over the year.
