On November 6th, 2024, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) published the Monthly Unemployment (MU) figures for October 2024. The Monthly Unemployment figures are estimated using trends in the Live Register figures based on data from the Labour Force Survey (LFS) and are subject to revision. The Labour Force Survey is published on a quarterly basis by the CSO and provides the official employment and unemployment figures.
According to the latest Monthly Unemployment figures, 121,200 people were unemployed in October 2024, a decrease of 4.6% on October 2023. The Monthly Unemployment Rate (MUR) was 4.2%, 0.3 percentage points lower than a year ago. 2,400 fewer women were unemployed in October 2024, and 3,400 fewer men than in October 2023. The Monthly Unemployment Rate for men decreased by 0.3 percentage to 4.1% and for women by 0.3 percentage points to 4.3%. Women accounted for 48% of the unemployed in October 2024 and 2023.
In October 2024, 41,100 people aged 15-24 were unemployed, 700 more young people than in October 2023. Their MUR was 10.6%, 0.5 percentage points lower than a year ago. Over the year, unemployment amongst young men increased by 5.6% to 20,800, and their unemployment rate was 10.5%, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points over the year. Unemployment amongst young women fell by 2% to 20,300, while their unemployment rate dropped by 0.7 percentage points to 10.8%. In October 2024, women accounted for 49% of those unemployed in this age category, a decrease of two percentage points over the year.
The Monthly Unemployment figure for people aged 25-74 was 80,100, in October 2024, a drop of 7.6% over the year. The Monthly Unemployment Rate (MUR) was 3.2% in October 2024, a decrease of 0.3 percentage points over the year. In this age category unemployment decreased for men by 10% to 41,600, while their MUR declined by 0.5 percentage points to 3.1%. Unemployment decreased for women by 5% to 38,400 women and their Monthly Unemployment Rate (MUR) declined by 0.3 percentage points to 3.2%. Women accounted for 48% of those unemployed in this age category in September 2024, an increase of one percentage point over the year.
